Post-Pandemic High School Football Participation Rebound and Girls Flag Football Boom
✨ Coach, Parents & Player Tips
Coach’s Clipboard: On game-day morning, fire up a 2-minute “gear relay”: line the squad up, have each player dash to their bag, suit up—jersey, cleats, flag belt—and race back to tag the next teammate. This quick race locks in their prep checklist, cranks up energy, and guarantees nobody shows up flag-less (or shoeless!).
Postgame Parents: Turn loading the car into a quick “Red Light, Green Light”—on “Green” they toss in one item, on “Red” they freeze—and by the time you hit 10, their bag’s packed, they’re primed, and you’ve both snagged a laugh before kickoff.
Players Snap: Every practice, hold a quick “dad-joke duel”—loser cranks out 10 push-ups while everyone else cheers (and groans); shared misery builds the tightest teams.
🔎 Feature Story
🏅 High school football continues to rebound from pre-pandemic decline
High school football participation has rebounded dramatically, with over 200,000 new players each year since post-pandemic play resumed, driven by record highs in 11-player programs and a 388% surge in girls flag football. As schools across the country expand offerings from traditional 11-player teams to six-person formats in rural areas, improved safety protocols and state-level sanctioning are revitalizing Friday night football and strengthening community engagement.
“When you play a varsity game on a Friday night, that’s what’s going on in town,” Lentz said. “And that’s what we want to keep, and we want schools to thrive and communities to thrive and have that opportunity.”
