2026-27 NFHS High School Flag Football Rule Changes and Girls Program Expansion
✨ Coach, Parents & Player Tips
Coach’s Clipboard: Before kickoff, run a 2-minute “silent snap” drill where everyone lines up, uses only hand signals and eye contact to run your two go-to plays—locks in focus, tests communication, and usually ends with a few over-dramatic mime moves that spark a good sideline laugh.
Postgame Parents: Set your phone’s alarm for a “gear-check” 30 minutes before kick-off—when it pings, race through cleats, flags, water and mouthguard together; winner scores the ultimate sideline high-five and zero last-minute panic.
Players Snap: Set a parking-lot alarm to yank you to the field—nothing kills momentum like sprinting from your car to the huddle at the last second.

🏅 NFHS Announces New Flag Football Rules for 2026-27
The NFHS Flag Football Rules Committee approved eight major revisions for the 2026-27 high school season, including a new comeback mechanism, updated safety restarts, expanded field dimensions, and clearer contact rules to boost strategy and consistency as the sport grows nationwide. These changes reflect input from state associations and aim to increase late-game drama, align flag football more closely with tackle football standards, and support the accelerating expansion of girls’ flag football programs.
“This will allow a team that is trailing the opportunity to run a high-risk play in order to retain possession and facilitate a potential comeback,” said Tyler Cerimeli, chair of the NFHS Flag Football Rules Committee and director of athletics and officials for the Arizona Interscholastic Association.
